Website review: Research Experiences for Undergraduates – REU

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

Here’s a review of Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), specifically the “Search for an REU Site” page. Since the REU page is not a typical job/internship posting site, this review, with accompanying video, aims to demonstrate site navigation and highlight the opportunities provided by the program. The REU Search page receives 3.5/5 sugar cubes. Please keep in mind that this review is not of the REU experiences themselves. REUs are highly competitive, prestigious summer research opportunities that are definitely worth exploring.

Job Board Reviews

I haven’t quite decided how best to go about reviewing job board sites. For the Career Center to Go site, I’ve conducted just two reviews so far and will be conducting many more, but I’m not sure if I should duplicate my reviews from that site to this one. What do you guys think?

For now, by all means, check my reviews of Indeed.com and Tech-centric.net.

Please let me know if there are particular job board sites you’d like to see reviewed.

Online Job Board Review Criteria

This page lays out the criteria I use when reviewing online job boards.

  • Aesthetic appeal
  • Ease of use
    – is the site easy to navigate?
    – can you find the things you want to find?
  • Range of search options
    – how specific can you be with your searches?
    – are the search options useful for the targeted audience?
  • Search results
    – how many postings appear, in general?
    – how many postings appear for the WI, IL, MN, MI, IA area? (I’m in the Wisconsin, so one of my criteria is whether or not job boards have results in and around the state.)
    – what is the ratio of postings from employers vs. third party recruiters? I’ll rate a site better if employer postings out weigh third party postings.
    – range of employers?
    – how easily can you link to the employer’s website to find out more?
  • Target audience effectiveness
