Quick Tip: Use a word cloud to improve your resume

sweetcareers_word_cloudI’m sure you’ve seen word clouds before – you know, they’re those fun collages made up of words. Sites like Wordle, Tagxedo, and Word It Out, allow you to paste text into a box then generate a word cloud that highlights the most frequently used words in the text.  (Some sites, like Tagxedo, even let you create a word cloud based on a specific shape – like the Sweet Careers logo!)

Word cloud generators are also an easy, (and fun), way to check which keywords your resume, (or the job description for a position you’re applying for), is emphasizing. All you have to do is cut and paste your resume into the generator’s create box and click submit. The words that are the largest in the word cloud are the ones you’re using most. Are the biggest words the ones you expected? Are you using too many buzzwords, (e.g. effective, innovative, expert)?

You can also use a word cloud to analyze your LinkedIn profile. Be sure to let me know if you need help revising your resume or LinkedIn profile. Share your resume word cloud in the comments.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry_ChristmasFirst off, I apologize for the lack of content lately. This fall has been an incredibly busy time for Sweet Careers and for me personally. But I am hoping to get into a more regular publishing schedule again, soon.

Thank-you!!
I also want to say a big thank you to all of the amazing students and young professionals I’ve had the pleasure of assisting these past few months. You’ve all been working so hard and I am so proud of all of you! Keep up the good work, and know I’m here if you need any help along the way.

A huge thanks has to be given to my amazing family and friends. As many of you know, I lost my dad at the start of September, and it’s been challenging, but I appreciate all your prayers and love. All I can say is, the Lord has been exceedingly faithful!

(Re-)Connecting
As we head into 2015, I would love to hear from ALL of you! Let me know what kind of content you would like to see on our blog, on our Facebook page, and on our Twitter feed. Many of you tend to reach out to me directly via email, which is fine, (especially for those of you who are job searching on the DL!), but if you’ve never connected with me, how would you prefer to connect? Twitter, LinkedIn, Viber? I’m pretty open, so let me know.

New services
Some of you have asked about new or additional services. In particular, there’s been increasing interest in the idea of hiring me on a “retainer” basis. For now, I’ve only made this available on a small scale. The basic idea is that you would be able hire me for 6, 9, or 12-month periods, giving you access to me as your personal career consultant for that period of time. Should I open this option for more people? Would you find it useful? We have a standard set of services, but are there other new services you’d like me to offer? How can I help YOU in 2015?

Merry Christmas, everyone! Here’s to an outstanding 2015!! Be safe!

5 Easy Ways to Annoy Everyone at Your New Job

annoyed_womanI recently asked some friends and colleagues what a new co-worker could do to really annoy them. While there was a wide range of potentially annoying behaviors, the following five consistently left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth:

Bail on your co-workers
Call in sick to work, and then post pictures of yourself on Instagram (or your site of choice) at a ball game from the same day.
How to be extra annoying: Make sure you call in sick on the day of an important meeting or event that everyone else will be staying late for.

Refuse to help out
When someone asks you for help on a small project, ALWAYS refuse; it will be particularly annoying if you are snarky when refusing.
How to be extra annoying: Insist that no where on your job description does it say that you need to help with that particular task.

Point out how each of your co-workers is doing their jobs WRONG
Since you have barely learned your own job, let alone anyone else’s, when you point out all the errors that your colleagues are making, you will definitely annoy them.
How to be extra annoying: Don’t tell your colleagues what they are doing wrong in person; instead, email them a list of their mistakes, and be sure to CC the rest of the staff while you’re at it.

Over-share, all the time
Whether at the photo copier, in meetings, via email, or in the parking lot, be sure to share private details about your personal life. The more private and embarrassing, the more annoying.
How to be extra annoying: Don’t take the hint when people stop talking to you or flat out tell you to stop over-sharing; just keep on sharing all your NSFW stories.

Ignore everyone else’s need for personal space
This one is super easy to do and only requires a complete lack of boundaries. For example, rifle through a co-worker’s desk for office supplies, read someone’s email over their shoulder, or plop yourself down on top of a colleague’s desk.
How to be extra annoying (and creepy): Follow your co-worker into the bathroom to continue your conversation with them there.

Of course, if you’re trying to get along with the people at your new job or internship, I’d suggest avoiding all of the above.

What co-worker attitudes or behaviors annoy you the most? Let us know in the comments.
