Questions Answered: I lied on my resume; what should I do now?

crossed fingersQuestion: I wasn’t entirely honest on my resume. I wrote down that I knew a particular technique but I don’t actually know it, I’ve just heard of it. Now I’m feeling guilty. What should I do? ~ Rojirah M., Baltimore, MD

Answer: You have a few options after submitting a resume or application that has false or inaccurate information on it.

Do nothing: In my opinion, this really is not an option. Leaving your resume with false or inaccurate information on it calls into question your integrity and can have lasting negative effects on your professional reputation. The truth will usually come to light eventually It’s never a good idea to submit an application that’s not accurate, but if you do, you should correct it.

Withdraw your application: You can contact the employer and let them know that you would like to withdraw your name for this particular search. If the skill or technique that you thought you had is a vital part of the job, and you are no longer qualified for the position, withdrawing from this search may make the most sense.

Send an updated resume: Make the necessary corrections to the resume, and if applicable, update any details that have changed since the last time you submitted. If the skill or technique that you included on your resume is not one that is vital to the role, and you still feel like you are qualified for the position, then updating your resume is probably the thing to do.

Be aware that you may be asked about the incorrect information on the original resume at some point during the hiring process. Be honest about the mistake, but know that you could still be removed from consideration by the hiring manager.

JOB SEARCH! Your ATTITUDE, the HIDDEN JOB MARKET and a comment on your RESUME!

ATTITUDE is critical to carrying you through tough times, whether it is health issues, financial issues, problems with a home, maybe a car, or even, your JOB SEARCH. If you do not have a good ATTITUDE almost nothing else matters.

Now I know that sometimes it is tough having or keeping a good ATTITUDE. It takes a lot of faith in what you are doing. What I do when I need an ATTITUDE check is go into survivor mode. What I mean by that is I think of what I have been through before and how I got through it. I ask myself “what did I do to get through this”? I also think about what I learned from previous experiences and try to apply them to the current issues that are working on my ATTITUDE. I have self-inflicted a lot on myself, and family, but we have always come through and always have come out the better. The next issue that comes up usually doesn’t seem as dramatic because I believe in the Marine saying “that that does not kill you makes you stronger”. Now who can argue with a Marine?

FREE Resume/Cover Letter Reviews for EVERYONE to aid Ondoy relief efforts

On September 26, 2008, Typhoon Ketsana, known in the Philippines as Ondoy, ravaged southeast Asia, leaving hundreds dead and many more homeless.

Sweet Careers already offers free resume/cover letter reviews for current college students and recent graduates. For the rest of October, Sweet Careers will be offering free resume or cover letter reviews to EVERYONE to aid in the relief efforts in the Philippines.

Here’s how it will work:

  • To receive a free review of your resume or cover letter, donate any amount to the Philippine National Red Cross. Your donation will be in Pesos – (here’s a calculator to convert USD to PHP). To receive a free review of both your resume and cover letter, donate more than P1200 (approximately $25.00USD).
  • In the comments section of this post, or on the Sweet Careers fanpage wall, let me know the amount you donated in pesos – this will help me keep a running total.
  • E-mail your resume and/or cover letter to me at sweetcareers.consulting@gmail.com in either Word or PDF format. If you have a specific position to which you are applying, a link in your e-mail to the job description would be helpful. If you do not have a specific position in mind, please tell me what type of position or industry you will be applying for.
  • In your e-mail, also indicate the username you used to make the comment on this page and the amount you donated so I can match you with your comment.
  • I’ll review your resume or cover letter in a brief video response (videos are password protected to ensure your privacy).
  • For college students or recent grads – if you would like your resume/cover letter to be reviewed, I will still provide a review even without a donation. However, feel free to donate and leave a comment on this post.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please DO NOT send any money to me.

While I cannot foresee how much assistance this service will generate for the relief efforts in the Philippines, I know that ANY amount of aid will help. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed the Philippine National Red Cross. Of course, prayers are always desired for all those who have lost family members and homes in this disaster.

There’s still room for a little kindness

This post is about being kind – in the workplace, and in life. Yes, I know, it sounds a bit old fashioned, maybe a bit backward. Some will say, “Grace, that just doesn’t work in the real world.” I mentioned this topic to a colleague and his response was, “Nobody gets ahead by being nice and kind. Are you sure you want to write about that?” Yes, actually, I DO want to write about this topic. More than ever. It seems like everywhere I look, I see people saying things and doing things that are mean – in the name of “getting ahead.”

So, I’m going to go ahead and write, albeit briefly, about being kind. However, I also realize that this post will likely not be shared or tweeted nearly as far and wide as other posts. That’s ok. These simple things still need to be stated.

So, here are a few thoughts about kindness.
