newspaperThe only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” – Donald Kendall

I know I’m dreaming, because I’m fresh out of school with “the world at my doorstep” and visions of grandeur about being Chief Executive Officer by the time I’m 30 years old. I have thousands of people working for me and my speaking engagements alone keep me incredibly busy. My office is the size of a large apartment and my administrative assistant has an administrative assistant! But wait, what’s that ringing sound way off in the background? It’s getting louder and . . .it’s almost like one of those dreams where you are falling and just when you are about to hit the ground you bounce in bed and on the second or third bounce I realize that the ringing sound is my alarm clock. Okay, time to get out of bed and join the real world (at least my real world). Not all of us will grow up to be Chairman of the Board. That’s okay, because not all of us want to have that type of responsibility. But no one starts at the top and for those that wind up at the top, it is usually due to hard work. Many, many years of hard work. Free resume review service update

Due to health concerns related to my pregnancy, I have had to be hospitalized. As a result, I am unable to continue the resume and cover letter review service at this time. Please know that I hope to eventually have the free service up and running at full capacity, with the addition of more services, later in 2010.

It’s all about leaving the search to the experts and while you don’t need to be Daniel Boone to find your next job, you should leverage the search experts to help you find your way. Many times (although not always), recruiters have job opportunities that have not been advertised (either in newspapers or on job boards). This is true not only for the high level executive jobs, but for many middle and entry level jobs as well. A recruiter is doing all of the leg work for both you (they’ve sourced the jobs) and the companies they represent (by supplying candidates that they’ve pre-screened). Recruiters should not be your only approach or source of potential jobs, but you should allow some time to leverage recruiters when conducting your search.

Inspired by Seth Godin’s recent e-book “What Matters Now”, I decided to give the topic some thought myself. What better time to ponder these questions than at the start of a new year, right? If I had been invited to participate in Seth’s book (I wasn’t), I would have written about something that is curiously absent from an otherwise comprehensive list.

Leadership.

Leadership matters.

And let’s be honest, 2009 was not a time of great leadership. So as we turn the page on a new year, here are a few ways to build your own leadership muscle in 2010 and beyond:
