Sweet Careers has moved!

Although there’s been a lack of posts, a lot has been going on behind the scenes at Sweet Careers. We’ve transitioned from the Blogger platform to our own domain, using WordPress to run the blog. (If you are reading this post through a reader or on Facebook, take a moment to check out our new website.)

We hope to have more posts coming soon and to make the free resume review service available again. Thank you all for your patience during my maternity leave. There are still a handful of changes to implement on the new site, and we are toying with the addition of new services. In the mean time, let me know if there any particular topics you’d like us to cover first.

UPDATE: It’s a boy!

Thank you all for your well wishes while I was on hospitalized bed rest. Though there was certainly much concern about preterm labor, the bed rest was effective! Baby Kutney arrived, full term, on April 26, weighing just under 8lbs at a length of 19in. My husband, my three year-old and I are just so blessed that baby is here safely and that we are both finally home.

As you might imagine, I am not able to update this site or my Twitter feed much at this time, but will return as soon as possible. Thank you all for your patience.

LAN-cables455Technology makes it possible for people to gain control over everything, except over technology” – John Tudor

Time for another list of companies where you may want to work. This list, provided by Computer World is an interesting list. The important thing to point out here is that the companies on this list are not necessarily technology companies but leverage technology in their companies and industries. So, if you are expecting to see a long list of “who’s who” in the tech world you wont (although there are some tech companies on the list). But this list is about great places to work (rather than the largest, most profitable companies). So this is about enjoying where you work (which I think is a goal we all have). And that is what makes this list so interesting, because it includes a broad range of companies (and institutions) many of which I never would have considered had I not seen them on this list. So if you are looking for diversity of industries, this is the list for you. There are over 770 job opportunities across the companies (and one institution) listed below.

If you’ve been struggling to find work this year, you’ve got company.

While the pace of job losses slowed last month, with payrolls declining by 11,000 positions in November 2009, the length of the average job search actually surged, to 28.5 weeks of average unemployment — the worst in more than 10 years.

So, times continue to be tough.

And times may stay tough, if you’re laboring under two of the most common and costly misconceptions that plague most job seekers.

What are they?
