Close, but no Job

Do not worry if others do not understand you. Instead worry if you do not understand others.” – Confucius

I played the role of hiring manager again this past week and it is always a somewhat surreal experience for me. Sometimes the career adviser in me wants to jump across the table, grab the candidate by the collar and say “hey, don’t you know how to prepare for an interview?”. But what amazes me more than anything else are those that manage to somehow spoil an otherwise great interview. Sometimes it’s during the interview (like the guy who told me he has to remind himself that not everyone is as smart as him). Sometimes it’s after the interview (poorly written thank you letters or no follow-up letter at all) and sometimes it’s other stuff (like your Spring Break picture posted on Facebook). Whatever your poison, it’s worth the time to find the antidote.

  • 25 Common Facebook Faux Pas That College Students Make – This article, from Onlinecollege.org, provides a list of things you want to avoid doing on Facebook. There are the usual suspects (like don’t post incriminating photos) to some that you might not have thought of (like playing too much Farmville???). In any case, this is definitely worth a read.

  • Top 50 Ways to Ruin Your Job Interview – As if one way was not enough. This listing was posted on ResumeBear.com’s blog and, although it is a long list, it is worth a read. My personal favorite is “don’t fall asleep or yawn” (I’ve actually had someone fall asleep when I was interviewing them), followed by “don’t arrive under the influence”. There are related links at the bottom of the page.
  • Crazy Job Interviews – Part 1 – Sometimes maybe it’s not you, maybe the interviewer is crazy. This article was posted on snagablog.com (and where there is a part 1, there is a part 2). These stories are worth a read. Some are funny and some not so much. There are additional related links as well. Take a look at Part 2 as well.
  • Job Interviewing Do’s and Don’ts – From Quintcareers.com, this article is a balanced view (both do’s and don’ts). A very good list, each item has embedded links to related articles. Lot’s of really good tips in this list and just the right information about each topic. While you are visiting the site, don’t forget to take a look at some of the other resources (links are at the top left hand side of the page).
  • Top 10 Funniest Job Horror Stories – From one of my favorite career sites, JobMob.co.il, there are some really funny stories here. All the more funny because they are true stories. If you think that you’ve had a bad interview, read these. Want more? Take a look at the link at the bottom of this post for some additional “lighter side” career related stories. While you are on the site, take a look at the other articles.

Good luck in your search.
