Targeted Job Search – Who’s Hiring in Technology Vol 5

Back to basics with one of my more popular topics – targeted job search. Specifically, job search leads for specific industries. And the most popular of my popular posts is of course jobs in technology. So at first glance you might wonder why anyone would have to tell a technologist how or where to look for jobs on the Internet. But, you may be good at technology but that does not necessarily mean you know where to look for a job. And, like everything else in life, technology jobs come in all sizes and shapes. There are jobs at actual technology companies or tech jobs at non-tech companies. Today’s post focuses on the “not in the top ten tech companies” because sometimes size or popularity does not matter.

Some of the Companies you Know and Love:

Google -“Let’s work together” is the tag line for Google’s careers page. And, they have a pretty neat careers site (as you would expect). There are all of the stories about the difficult job interview process, but people do get hired. Top left hand side of the page has links to Joining Google and Life at Google (along with office locations). Center page is the job search function (key word, locations and categories). Browse by locations or visit their social media channels.

Job Seeking? This is Your Current Job

Don’t think you have a job, think again. Even though you may not have a steady income, do not discount the work that should go into a job search. For now, your job search is your job. Remember these tips:

Be more than prepared- Keep a fresh resume and cover letter on hand just in case you encounter job opportunities you want to apply for.

Use job search engines- Go online to learn about job opportunities. In addition, create job search agents to have these opportunities emailed to you.

References- Have multiple professional and personal contacts available who can put in a good word for you. Tell them in advance about your job search.

Network, network, network- Remember, many jobs are unadvertised. By interacting with your network, you could discover open positions before other job seekers.

Five Career Tips for College Freshman

If you are a college freshman, time is on your side. How, you may ask? Well for one, hopefully the job market will be better in four years. And for another, you have 4 years to do all of the things you really need to do to set yourself apart from your classmates and the millions of other people that are competing for jobs. I know some college grads that are working in liquor stores or as cashiers in clothing stores. I don’t think this is where you want to work when you graduate (not that there is anything wrong with that). You need to position yourself now to be in the best bargaining position 3 and 4 years from now. Now is your chance to get ahead of the game rather than wishing you had been more diligent. So where to start? Take a read.

Internships: There are all different types of internships, the important thing is to ensure you participate as often as possible. There are summer internships and internships where you participate part time while you are in school (like c0-operative programs). Obviously the best internships go the quickest, but if you do your homework now (no pun intended), you can get a head start. If you don’t already know, internships give you practical experience before you get out into the working world. This experience is invaluable. Additionally, many graduating college students get their best leads (and sometimes jobs) from previous internships.
