Find Me a Job: How to Score a Job Before Your Friends

We have often said that the process of finding a job or an internship is a full time job! It takes time, careful research, a good support network, and a bit of good luck. To give you a bit of extra help this this holiday season, we’d like to let you know about an online job search course, “Find Me A Job: How To Score A Job Before Your Friends.” Created by Heather Huhman, a career expert, experienced hiring manager, and founder & president of Come Recommended, this course is designed to help students and recent college graduates land internships and entry-level jobs. Topics covered include:

  • What to do before your search even begins
  • How to identify your wants and needs — and find matching opportunities
  • How to submit applications that will generate responses
  • How to succeed in every type of interview — video, phone and in-person
  • How to follow up at every stage of the hiring process
  • How to handle rejection — and evaluate and accept job offers
  • How to succeed on the job once you secure a position

The course is normally $49 (and a steal at that price), but Heather has provided us with a coupon code for the holidays that will bring the fee for the course down to $24!! (The coupon is good until 11:59PM On December 25, 2012.) Here’s the coupon code link: http://www.udemy.com/find-me-a-job/?couponCode=connections. Please feel free to share the link with friends or loved ones who are looking for jobs or internships.

Sweet Careers does not receive any reward (monetary or otherwise) on the sale of this course. The link and coupon code are provided for the benefit of our readers.

While many seekers think that networking is a random act that involves telling people they need employment, connecting with the right professionals involves more effort. This is why it’s important to learn the steps of setting up a job seeking network.

Join Online Professional Networks

A great way to get connected to dozens—and sometimes even hundreds—of people is by joining online professional networks. Millions of college students throughout the country recently threw their caps up into the air and are now ready to make a fresh start in the workforce. If you’re a recent college grad, you’re probably excited about your prospects—and you should be!

While it’s no secret that you are entering a tough industry—with fresh ideas and a spirited attitude—you are undoubtedly a great candidate. You just have to prove it by writing a quality resume. Here are tips to get started:

Brand Yourself

As a relatively new candidate seeking employment in the workforce, it’s important that you brand yourself as a top candidate in your field. A good approach is to add a branding statement to your resume that identifies your professional title and offers a few sentences highlighting your accomplishments. It summarizes how valuable you are and entices the hiring manager to learn more about you.

Target Specific Companies

The next step toward creating an amazing resume is tailoring it to the company you are applying with. This requires that you carefully review each job you’re writing a resume for and add skills and accomplishments that tell the employer you are qualified based on your history.

Include All Relevant Experience

As a person who has just graduated, it’s possible that you don’t have a great deal of professional experience. But you still want to list all skills and experiences that are relevant to each job you want, even if it means including clubs, volunteer experience, and coursework.
