There is probably no such thing as “the perfect job search”. However, if you want a job, and eventually a career, you should give yourself the best chance to succeed. Avoiding these mistakes can help you along the way:
-Don’t sabotage your personal brand- A personal brand is a representation of who you are before a specific audience. Many of today’s recruiters and employers conduct online research to learn about potential candidates. Clean up any inappropriate pictures or language that may disqualify you from their lists.
-Don’t be afraid to jump on an “out of the box” opportunity- With uncertainty in the job market, it is wise to keep all of your options open. Something that seems unimaginable today could open the door to a new career.
-Don’t necessarily turn down the job “no one else wants”- Just because a position isn’t the most glamorous one doesn’t mean it could not be a good fit for you. Whether or not you have definitive career interest in mind, getting your foot in the door somewhere is important; even if there isn’t a job available, consider opportunities such as an internship, which can allow you to learn more about a career field.
Finding a job and a career can take some time, even with your best effort. By making the career mistakes mentioned, you may slow yourself down further on the road to success.
