Online reputation, whether you have been searching for a job for a while, or are just entering the job market, it’s probably something you have heard about.  But how can you increase your online reputation?  What are some easy steps you can take to start developing it?  Here are five easy ways to get started:

Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Job Search

I coulda done this, I coulda done that. But I know I can’t go back ‘Cause now it’s just too late I’m sayin’ shoulda woulda coulda, yeah” – Brian McKnight

I spend a lot of time with vendors, service suppliers and consultants in my job. One consulting firm in particular screwed up a project big time. Cost overruns, unfinished work, stuff that didn’t work at all, you get the picture. And then, to add insult to injury, they wanted more money to finish the work that they should have done for the original boatload of money we paid them. Anyway, I was talking with the sales guy from the consulting company and he went on and on – “we should have done this, we should have done that, we should have communicated early, wah wah wah”. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Who cares? Move on, you can’t change the past.

So what’s the point? Whatever your reason for looking for a new job, you can’t dwell on what got you here and you can’t worry about what you should have done in your job search. Forget the past, look forward to what you can do and make today the first day of the rest of your job search.

There is a process in most companies as to how a job is created and a JOB DESCRIPTION generated for that job. It starts with a Hiring Manager having a need as well as a budget to hire someone. From that point, the request goes to Human Resources (HR) to determine if it is a justified need. If the Hiring Manager does a good job in justifying the need, HR will buy off on the request and approve a requisition for it.

Get The Edge: Personalize Your Resume For Each Job

In this competitive job market, there are scores of applicants who are perfect for every job, and are willing to spend extra time tailoring their resume and cover letter to each job to which they apply. If you are serious about your job search, it is essential that you do the same.

Why? That’s because hiring managers know the difference between a blind applicant and someone who took the time to individualize their resume to the experience and skills required for the job. The best way to do that is to use the job description to match with the skills you have to offer.
