What is it?
Todoist is a web-based task or project management system. It helps you stay organized, and because it’s cloud-based, you can keep on top of your tasks where ever you go.
Why we like it.
We tried out a number of different task managers, including Remember the Milk, Google Tasks, Producteev, Outlook tasks, iCloud Reminders and a few others. All of the other task managers we tried had some great features, and one of them may be exactly what you’re looking for, but Todoist gets our nod for a few key reasons, ones we think college students and young professionals will also find appealing:
- It’s cloud-based, but it still works when you don’t have wifi. If you are using an iOS mobile device, the Todoist app has offline support. (Otherwise, you can still use Todoist offline, as long as you sync first before you go offline.) So, whether you’re in class, in your res. hall, on the bus, at work or walking around campus, you still have access to your tasks and projects.
- There are plugins for Chrome, Firefox, and Outlook, and a handy bookmarklet that can be installed on most any browser. This makes updating and adding new tasks really easy.
- Gmail integration. This was a major factor in our decision to use Todoist! Since so many of our tasks come in the form of emails, we love the ability to create a task from an email. Later, when we return to the task, the link opens up the original email. Google Tasks does this too, (and integrates more seamlessly), but Todoist also integrates with Outlook, if you happen to use that email client. If you’re interning, working full time, or in any situation where you are receiving a number of action items via email, this feature can be especially helpful. Of course, it assumes that you are using either Gmail or Outlook.
- Project management. Say you’re working on a major project, like a term paper. Todoist allows you to set up projects with numerous tasks and sub-tasks under each. You’re able to set up deadlines and due dates, as well as add labels (which act like tags).
The paid version adds a bit more functionality, such as allowing notes for tasks, productivity tracking and an improved labeling system. At just $29 a year, it’s quite affordable to upgrade.

By admin, on September 12th, 2012  Take advantage of faculty office hours! Yes, we’re really serious on this one! Most of your faculty set up weekly office hours. Here are just a few reasons to meet with them:
- Ask specific questions about assignments or the course.
- Receive feedback on your progress.
- Get academic advising.
- If you’re interested in a their particular field or career path, you might be able to pick the professor’s brain about that, too.
- It will make it easier for you to learn about future research opportunities.
However, the majority of college students never use these office hours and only meet with their faculty if required. If you can’t make it to regularly scheduled office hours, set up an appointment. Of course, be respectful of your faculty’s time: prepare your questions in advance, and don’t no-show!
There’s a wealth of knowledge and expertise just waiting for you, and you’ll likely not have this kind of access again after graduation, so take advantage while you can!
By admin, on August 29th, 2012  Even if you’re completely sure about your choice of major, it’s still a good idea to explore multiple disciplines, and your freshman year in college is a great time to start. There’s usually less room in your academic schedule to fit in classes from other departments the further along you get in your major, so take the time to explore while you have the chance.
- Try out classes that will give you exposure to new skills, or topics that you just find fascinating.
- Maybe take a class with an especially well-respected professor, or one that you know will force you to think in new ways.
- Consider classes that will allow you to meet a wider range of students and faculty. One of my former students, a bio-chemistry major, took a few theatre arts classes in her freshman year. Although she later had no time in her schedule to take more classes in the theatre department, the friendships she made in those first classes have lasted well beyond graduation. She knows that she likely would not have made those connections had she not taken the classes outside her discipline.
- Taking classes in another discipline may also open up opportunities to add a minor or even for a double major.
Of course, work closely with academic advising to ensure any courses you take don’t conflict with your required course load. Give yourself exposure to a variety of classes – at worst, you’ll confirm your interest in your own major, at best, you’ll make some new friends, learn something new, and broaden your horizons.
