An important update: Good and Bad news

If you read this blog on a regular basis, you know that I rarely break from the topic of career to share anything personal with you. Today, however, I thought it pertinent to share some important news that will impact my readers.

First, the good news: I am expecting! At the time of this post, I am 23 weeks pregnant. My husband, my three year old and I are VERY excited about the newest addition to our family.

The not-so-good news: I was just advised by my doctor that, due to medical necessity, and to ensure my safety and the safety of my baby, I need to “slow down.” I may be placed on complete bedrest at some point, but for now, I’ve been told to get more rest. “Resting” is generally not in my vocabulary, so this will be a challenge. However, my doctor has made it clear that continuing at the pace I am used to may result in preterm labour, or worse, so, it is a challenge I will most certainly accept.

Impact for my readers: I do not yet know what the full impact will be for this site, my Twitter feed, Sweet Careers on Facebook, etc. but I suspect posts will slow down significantly for the remainder of the pregnancy and for the first few months to follow. I may also have to cease the free resume/cover letter service for a little while, but I will make a decision on that at a later date.

My fellow career professionals: I would welcome additional guest posts with a focus on career and job advice for college students and recent grads.

Thank you all for supporting this site and being such an inspiration to me. I also truly appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

Free resume/cover letter review service holiday update

The free resume/cover letter review service will be unavailable from December 16, 2009 to January 8, 2010. Resumes or cover letters received after December 16 will not be reviewed until January 9.

FREE Resume/Cover Letter Reviews for EVERYONE to aid Ondoy relief efforts

On September 26, 2008, Typhoon Ketsana, known in the Philippines as Ondoy, ravaged southeast Asia, leaving hundreds dead and many more homeless.

Sweet Careers already offers free resume/cover letter reviews for current college students and recent graduates. For the rest of October, Sweet Careers will be offering free resume or cover letter reviews to EVERYONE to aid in the relief efforts in the Philippines.

Here’s how it will work:

  • To receive a free review of your resume or cover letter, donate any amount to the Philippine National Red Cross. Your donation will be in Pesos – (here’s a calculator to convert USD to PHP). To receive a free review of both your resume and cover letter, donate more than P1200 (approximately $25.00USD).
  • In the comments section of this post, or on the Sweet Careers fanpage wall, let me know the amount you donated in pesos – this will help me keep a running total.
  • E-mail your resume and/or cover letter to me at sweetcareers.consulting@gmail.com in either Word or PDF format. If you have a specific position to which you are applying, a link in your e-mail to the job description would be helpful. If you do not have a specific position in mind, please tell me what type of position or industry you will be applying for.
  • In your e-mail, also indicate the username you used to make the comment on this page and the amount you donated so I can match you with your comment.
  • I’ll review your resume or cover letter in a brief video response (videos are password protected to ensure your privacy).
  • For college students or recent grads – if you would like your resume/cover letter to be reviewed, I will still provide a review even without a donation. However, feel free to donate and leave a comment on this post.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please DO NOT send any money to me.

While I cannot foresee how much assistance this service will generate for the relief efforts in the Philippines, I know that ANY amount of aid will help. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed the Philippine National Red Cross. Of course, prayers are always desired for all those who have lost family members and homes in this disaster.

Sweet Careers Twitter account compromised

First, thank you to all my followers on Twitter! Twitter has been such a powerful networking tool and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know some of you and hope to get to know more of you over the course of time.

I did, however, want to let you know that my @sweetcareers account and my @LUCareerCenter account have been compromised. I’m not sure of the extent of the “damage” and am trusting that Twitter will deal with the issue. At the moment, I’m unable to log into either account because of @tanzo. The most recent post appearing on my account, pictured in the image to the left, was not sent by me. Hopefully the problem will be resolved soon (I’m scheduled to speak about Twitter during a presentation tomorrow!). In the mean time, if anyone needs to get a hold of me, please use the “Contact Me” button on this blog. Thank you so much!

UPDATE 4-16-09: I now have control of both @sweetcareers and @LUCareerCenter again. @tanzo returned both accounts to me. I try to see the good in most situations, so the good I see in this is the reminder to be CAUTIOUS when using 3rd party applications. I think part of the beauty of Web 2.0 is the ability to transition from one application to the next with only one username/password, but we do have to be cautious about applications with which you are unfamiliar. Also, change up your password periodically.
