- Head to your campus career center within the first weeks of class and attend any orientation sessions provided.
- Plan to attend on-campus recruiting information sessions or information tables, and any career fairs, to connect with recruiters.
- Identify internship and job opportunities that interest you and get their deadlines on your calendar.
- Networking with alumni and other professionals in your field to learn about more opportunities and to get insider tips on the application process.
- With the help of career services, prepare tailored resumes and cover letters.
- Even if some of your internship deadlines aren’t until after the new year, send your applications in early, then follow-up a few times before the Christmas holidays.
By admin, on August 12th, 2013  Move-in day is just around the corner for thousands of college students. Here are some tips for making move-in day a success:
- Know your residence’s policies well in advance of move-in day, and make sure your parents are well aware of them, too. Many well-meaning parents have tried to bring, install, or move things that aren’t allowed.
- Label your boxes with locations and descriptions of what’s inside. Eg. “Desk Items – note paper, pens, pencils, clock.”
- Bring tools, cleaning supplies (disinfecting wipes and Lysol will be your close friends!), duct tape and a lot of cold bottled water to keep you hydrated.
- Bring some sort of hand-dolly (something with wheels) to help move boxes.
- Pay close attention to drop-off/unloading spots for freshmen and keep a campus map handy.
- Pre-load all of the events you’ll be attending on your phone’s calendar, including event locations, but also keep a print copy close by.
- Encourage your parents to attend any parent orientation sessions.
- Don’t spend too much time, or stress, trying to organize your room right away.
- Touch base with your school’s IT department to get yourself, your laptop and any mobile devices registered on the school’s network.
- If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, take a break. Remember, you’ve accomplished a lot to get into college; a “less than perfect” move-in day can’t take that away from you.
- When it’s time to say goodbye to your parents, it’s ok to be sad.
- As busy and full as move-in day can be, take the time to enjoy it!

Check with your school’s human resources department AND financial aid office AND career services office.
Schools deal with student employment differently. Some have a centralized office, others rely on individual departments to post their opportunities. HR is a good starting place. Financial aid sometimes gets involved depending on your work-study eligibility. Career service may post on-campus jobs along with off-campus opportunities. So ask around to find out how on-campus employment is managed at your school.
Visit departments for which you’d like to work
A lot of college departments hire students. The typical places (library, bookstore, food services, physical plant, admissions, athletics, residence life) may have a standard hiring and training schedule. But many other departments (career services, academic advising, international student services, IT, major-specific departments, business office – just to name a few), may also have opportunities available, but may hire at different times throughout the school year.

- Sign up for rewards programs – many banks offer rewards or money-back programs for using their credit cards. However, as with any credit card, be sure you’re able to pay yours off each month or you’ll negate the money-saving benefits. Also, keep your eyes open for hidden fees. Other rewards programs can be as simple as coffee cards, or the like, that give you free product after purchasing a set number of items.
- Take advantage of student rates – a number of companies and professional associations offer discounts for college students. For example, Amazon Student gives students six months free access to their Amazon Prime program (minus instant video streaming), and then half-price on Amazon Prime after that. Hewlett Packard and Apple offer student pricing on electronics. And Sweet Careers provides free resume and cover letter reviews for current college students and recent graduates.
- Buy used textbooks – many schools will offer the option to buy used text books, or may have formal or informal exchange programs between students. In some cases, you may even be able to go without buying one or two textbooks in a given class! Many instructors will reserve copies of the textbook in the library for their students, however you will probably have to read the book in the library. Some students have also had success getting books through interlibrary loan.
- Shop using price matching – a number of grocery and retail stores offer price-matching programs that will match the price of a product that has been advertised for less at a different store. Walmart, Target, Best Buy and J.C. Penney are a few examples. This requires some coordination on your part, but can save quite a lot of money. If you are uncertain if a store offers price-matching, make a point to ask.
- Consider buying generic items – whether medication, personal care products, or food, many name brands have generic equivalents that are significantly cheaper.
