In the following video, I offer my suggestions for what three sites you should check out if you’re new to using social media for job search. You’re tweeting all kinds of things I’m interested in today. I saw this and had to share my own story about social media and job searching — that’s how I found my job!
In the last semester of college (I graduated May of 09), I was debating between law school and getting a job. I was reading that with the economy, it was smart to start a social media campaign, so that’s what I did, in case I decided to go the the law school route.
I started tweeting and blogging about Web 2.0 job-search strategies. Through Twitter, I got in touch with a great lawyer turned career counselor in Maine (I’m from North Carolina). She helped me decide law school wasn’t for me, and also took an interest in my job search. We tweeted and e-mailed for a few months. Then about a month ago, she connected me with a company that creates Web-based career development software in Durham, NC. I met with the company, and within a week, I had a job as a social media strategist.
What’s really funny is a few weeks prior, my dad said, “You’re going to have to send out resumes at some point. This whole social media thing probably won’t land you a job.” I don’t know if it would work for everyone, but it worked for me.
